Loveless (I Am the Snow Queen)
Brittany Warman

Ice splits, sticks
the corner of my eye.
Loveless,
but not less without love,
I stop the search and wonder –
is this her curse then?
Does she need
the cold kisses of spellbound boys
to tell her who she is?

I open my mouth,
howl into the snow,
still mistress of my fate.
Ice covers my heart
and words freeze into being
across my chest, through my hair –
I am, I am

Inside, my terrified heart beats again
the cool poetry of winter,
the poetry of the loveless.
Without words, I choose the words.
I leave him with her,
go back down the mountain.
I choose to be what I am.
I am the Snow Queen.
Not silent, not less.
